This overly long sequel to The Girl in the Steel Corset finds Finley Jayne in New York City, again struggling to control her dark side. She infiltrates a criminal gang in order to rescue her friend, Jasper, and his love, Mei, who is forced to wear a clockwork collar that tightens if someone makes a wrong move. An entertaining, if messy, mash-up of Victorian technology and romance. (c) Copyright 2012. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

Upon landing in New York via airship at the close of the nineteenth century following their earlier adventures in England (The Strange Case of Finley Jayne and The Girl in the Steel Corset, both 2011) Finley Jayne and her misfit friends in the circle of the Duke of Greythorne are desperate to save their friend Jasper from a dangerous blackmail situation. But with each false move from Jasper, the mechanical clockwork collar around Mei's (the girl Jasper loves) throat tightens. Dark struggles with light and good battles bad, as they traverse the city on their quest for love and loyalty. A powerful Aether (humans who are only half so) and machines with the power to harm and help all play roles here in satisfying fans of romantic steampunk.--Medlar, Andrew Copyright 2010 Booklist
