The first volume in Bowker's new ``Buying Guide'' series is a compilation of indepth reviews of 400 general reference books, including encyclopedias, atlases, and dictionaries. Assisted by subject specialists and further guided by a survey of school and public librarians, editor Sader has produced a solid professional selection tool also helpful to teachers and parents. Each major type of reference is treated in a separate section, with online sources also covered; the most useful features are the hands-on advice and inclusion of large-print sources. Treatment is more selective and intensive than Carolyn Peterson's Reference Books for Children (Scarecrow, 1981) or Christine Wynar's Guide to Reference Books for School Media Centers (Libraries Unlimited, 1986. 3rd ed.) but less exhaustive than Kenneth F. Kister's Best Encyclopedias ( LJ 11/15/86) and Kister's Atlas Buying Guide ( LJ 5/15/84). For public and academic libraries. Harry E. Whitmore, Univ. of Maine, Augusta (c) Copyright 2010.
