Ages 5^-8. Mora's tender account, inspired by the real-life story of Tomas Rivera is especially touching in this fluid Spanish rendition. Many of us from Hispanic America, who never enjoyed the luxuries of school or public libraries in our countries of origin, will identify with Tomas' story. Colon's upbeat scratchboard illustrations beautifully capture the special thrill and warm feelings Spanish speakers feel when welcomed by a smiling librarian into the world of books. The story is especially appropriate as librarians (and teachers) struggle to introduce this baffling new institution--the library--to young Spanish speakers (and their parents).
